The History of Fliptomania
Fliptomania was founded in 1996 by Mark Weissberg, 1st cousin of the current owner, Matthew Fassberg. At the time, Matthew was working with a team of animators at a game company. He introduced Mark to several artists and, over the years, served as an informal sounding board for Mark as the company grew. Matt was always coming up with suggestions for books and new markets to explore.
Nearly three decades later, Matthew acquired Fliptomania and began imagining its next chapter, developing new titles and promoting the flipbook medium.
For a high-tech guy, Matthew has a decidedly low-tech streak. He’s always been drawn to things from the past that still have something to say.
In the early ’90s, he launched OvenArts, transforming vintage stoves from the 1950s with colorful porcelain, hand-painted knobs and even neon trim. OvenArts was featured in more than 15 national publications. Later, he produced a concert experience called Easy Rider Live, turning a movie screening into a concert with a live band to perform all the songs from the best-selling soundtrack of the 1969 classic film. As someone always drawn to making iconic items from the past relevant today, it’s not surprising he finds himself running a company devoted to one of the earliest—and simplest—forms of animation.
A flipbook can be playful, funny, educational, romantic, or completely ridiculous. It can bring motion to a drawing by M.C. Escher, show the evolution of trains and planes, or reveal a caterpillar's transformation into a butterfly.
“The frame rate is dictated by your thumb,” Matthew explains. “You can move through the book faster or slower—and in just a few seconds, dive into a little world. A flipbook is analog animation in its purest form.”
That hands-on quality helps explain why flipbooks continue to fascinate children who have grown up surrounded by screens. Customers describe children flipping the books again and again, using them to learn how animation works, and passing them around to parents, grandparents and friends.
Behind the scenes, Matthew’s son, Cosmo, helps out with social media, new books, shipping and the day-to-day logistics of the warehouse.
